New Parental Sharing Benefit

Last month the Canadian government introduced a new benefit effective March 17,2019 providing an additional period of EI Parental Benefits.

Whether parents to a newborn or newly adopted child, individuals can now choose between two options:

Standard Parental Benefits
  • Receive benefits for up to 35 weeks
  • If these benefits are shared between both parents you can receive five additional weeks, totaling 40 weeks, divided however you choose. These 40 weeks must be used within the 12 months after the date your child was born or place with you for adoption

Within the standard option you will receive 55% of your weekly earnings, to a maximum of $562 per week.

Extended parental benefits
  • Receive benefits for up to 61 weeks
  • If these benefits are shared between both parents you can receive eight additional weeks, totaling 69 weeks, divided however you choose. These 69 weeks must be used during the 18 months after the date your child was born or place with you for adoption

Within the extended option you will receive 33% of your weekly earnings to a maximum of $337 per week.
